Unfortunately, this transponder key will not work with your JDM 2001 Forester STI either.
The DAT17T13 key with the 4D60 (G chip) is a high-security laser-cut key used in 2010–2014 Subaru models (Forester, Impreza WRX/STI, Legacy, Outback). It's actually a newer generation than the SUB4-PT — different keyway, different chip, different immobilizer system.
Your JDM 2001 Forester STI uses a much older immobilizer system. JDM Foresters from MY1997–2001 typically used a Denso cryptographic immobilizer, which is not compatible with either:
- The 4D62 chip (SUB4-PT — 2005+ US models), or
- The 4D60 G chip (DAT17T13 — 2010+ models)
Even though the key blade may look similar, the transponder chip inside the head and the immobilizer system in your car are completely different. The key would physically turn the ignition, but the engine would shut off after a few seconds because the immobilizer won't recognize the chip.
What you actually need: For a JDM 2001 Forester STI, you'll need a transponder key matched to the Denso immobilizer system specific to JDM Subarus of that era. These keys are not common in the US aftermarket, and your best bet is:
- A specialty JDM/import-focused locksmith who can identify the exact immobilizer in your car and clone or program a compatible chip.
- A JDM parts supplier in Japan for an OEM Subaru key blank that matches your vehicle.
