The owner's manual "two-keys-in-ignition" procedure for Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury vehicles only works if you already have two working programmed keys. If you only have one working key (or none), the onboard procedure will not program a new key — you'll need a scan tool to add it through the vehicle's PATS system.
A few other things to check:
- The key must be cut to your ignition first before programming (locksmith or hardware store with key-cutting equipment).
- The new key must be the correct chip for your vehicle (this key uses a 4D63 80-bit chip, which is backward compatible with most 1998–2015 Ford/Lincoln/Mercury PATS vehicles).
Please note: key4.com is a B2B supplier serving professional automotive locksmiths. For cutting, programming, and troubleshooting, we recommend contacting a local automotive locksmith — they'll have the proper scan tool and can get the key working in a single visit, usually at a lower cost than the dealer.
