Open susceptible knob or gate latch locks quickly. In experienced locksmiths' use, a latch shim opens around 25% of residential door lockouts when the deadbolt is not locked. Use it as your first option: either the door opens in 5–10 seconds, or you move on to picking.

How to Use

• STEP 1: Pull the door towards you so the dead latch falls into the strike hole.
• STEP 2: Slide the shim into the door gap below the latch, then move it upwards until it touches the latch.
• STEP 3: Move the shim backwards until it clears the latch, then move it up on top of the latch.
• STEP 4: Push the shim forward firmly while pulling the door towards you. If the latch is susceptible, the door should open. If not, move on to your next opening method (for example, picking the lock).

TIP: The dead latch must extend far enough out from the faceplate for the shim to work. Pulling the door firmly towards you is one way; under the right conditions, an air wedge can also create a large enough gap between the door and the jamb. It may take extra force to move the latch, but the door will often pop open this way.
